Robert J. Mitchell BA (Hons) DMS
Executive Director

Robert has spent his entire career in the not-for-profit sector and has over 15 years of senior executive management and leadership experience. He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Studies, for non-profit making organizations. He started his career at the Boys & Girls clubs in the UK, eventually becoming CEO of Middlesex Young People Clubs. He moved to Canada in 2003 and after completing a number of local contracts became the Executive Director of the Independent Living Resource Centre in Calgary. A business purchase moved Robert and his wife Jill to Central Alberta and after Parkland Beach General Store was established, Robert had his first Edmonton experience by working for Volunteer Alberta as a Knowledge Connector consultant. His last position was as the CEO of United Way Central Alberta which he productively managed for over 6 years.

Robert is looking forward to continuing and expanding the great work of JFSE.

Megan Kompf
Manager of Programs & Services

I have devoted my entire career to work within the non-profit sector and have been fortunate to work for local agencies such as CASA, Catholic Social  Services, and CNIB.  I am skilled at implementing or creating programs and services to assist children, youth, families, and seniors realize their full potential. The majority of the culturally diverse populations I have worked with are highly marginalized individuals who require intervention and support on mental health, addiction, family violence, and trauma fronts within their recovery process.

I am passionate about strong community support for all that need it and teamwork that helps clients identify their resiliency. I have been the Manager of Programs and Services for the past 3 years.

Alyona Lanyme
Office Administrator

Alyona Lanyme joined Jewish Family Services in 2017 as an Office Administrator. She provides assistance to all counselors, and office staff with the day to day operations. Alyona immigrated to Canada from Kazakhstan in 2016, and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance. She also speaks Russian and English which is essential for communicating with our client base.

Linda Robinson
Finance Administrator

I am the Financial Administrator for Jewish Family Service.  I joined the team in August, 2016.  I bring more than 35 years’ experience working with senior level management in the areas of finance, office management, outreach and administrative support. I have always enjoyed working in the field of accounting, but when I can add that to an organization that provides such valuable services to the community, it is an added bonus.

I enjoy wheelchair curling, attending powwows and spending time with my grandchildren

Alberto Genis
Home Support Services Supervisor

Alberto has gathered over 10 years’ experience working with non-profit organizations. After many years working of managing and being part of different non-for-profit human organizations, Alberto began working with Holocaust Survivors as JFS team member in 2011. He developed a program for senior Holocaust survivors, providing services in their own homes and fulfilling their basic needs.

In his spare time, Alberto travels, likes outdoor activities, spends time with his friends and is an avid volunteer.

Alena Sasnouskaya
Program Assistant

Alena has an Administrative Assistant diploma from Campbell College, Alberta. She has worked for the Jewish Family Services since 2012. She has significant experience in working with marginalized and undeserved populations.

She is passionate about traveling, sport and art. Alena speaks English, Russian, and Belarussian.

Rhonda Eidelman
Seniors Outreach Worker / Claims Conferen
ce Case Manger 

Rhonda has worked for Jewish Family Services Edmonton since 2003. She has been an active member of the Jewish community since 1981, when she and her husband moved  to Edmonton from Toronto via Saskatchewan. The Eidelmans’ have five children and Rhonda worked as a nurse prior to their birth returning to work at JFS when they were teenagers. Rhonda continues to support seniors adjust to the changes that occur with aging and support the survivors in the community to meet their daily needs.

Jeni Adler
Intercultural Facilitator / Community Resource Specialist

Jeni is an immigrant from South Africa who also lived in Israel.  Jeni has worked in non-profit for over thirty years, including the Sexual Assault Centre, Canadian Mental Health, and Planned Parenthood.  She has been with JFS for seventeen years.  Jeni has a special interest in supporting people through their immigration experiences and personal transitions.  The loves of her  life are her daughter, new son-in-law, Israeli husband and Coba the mutt.

Tatiana Kastner
Gerontological Social Worker

I am a Gerontological social worker, and I love to work on the frontline to help my clients with diverse needs. In 2012 I relocated from Montreal to Edmonton, and immediately fell in love with the city. I am happy to work for such a friendly, vibrant and generous community.

I hold a Master degree in Social Work from McGill University and have a significant experience in working with immigrants and older adults. At the JFS I work for the Holocaust Survivors Support program facilitating the clients’ access to existing grants, assessing their needs, creating a service plan and ensuring its implementation while constantly reassessing their situation. I also volunteer for other programs within our organisation helping with some complex situations and counselling.

I enjoy city hiking and Whitemud park is my personal sanctuary, where I spend most of evenings. I also speak English, French, Russian and Hebrew

Carolyn Tait MSW
Contract Therapist

CAROLYN has been with Jewish Family Services as a therapist since March of 2018.  Carolyn has a Bachelor of Science in Psychology, with a Minor in Family Life.  She completed a Master of Social Work at Michigan State University, with an emphasis on Clinical Social Work and School Social Work. Carolyn comes to JFSE with a background working with children and families, foster-care and runaway youth, Hospice and school social work.

Carolyn worked for many years with Community Mental Health in Michigan, with a focus on children and families. She also worked with Runaway  Youth Services and later was with a K-12 school system as a school social worker.   She also worked with Hospice of Central Michigan, supporting families whose loved ones were near death.

Carolyn is currently pursuing further training with Somatic Experience, deepening her knowledge and skills related to working with people who have experienced trauma.

David Rolston
Contract Therapist

I have been at JFS since my practicum in the fall of 2013. I work with individuals, couples, and families on diverse issues such as anxiety, trauma, and depression, and I also facilitate grief groups for the Edmonton Healing Center for Grief and Loss.

My background includes training and experience in the areas of counselling psychology, trauma therapy, alternative healing, meditation, and engineering. I am also a certified teacher with 20 years of experience instructing at the secondary and post-secondary levels. I have travelled extensively, living abroad for 3 years in India, Australia, Germany, Japan, Sri Lanka, and the US. My diverse life experience helps me to connect and communicate more effectively with a variety of clients and issues.

I am currently a Certified Canadian Counsellor (from the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association) with a Master’s degree in Counseling Psychology.

Anna Jongeleen
Contract Therapist

I started my career as a therapist in 2002.  I am multi talented and trained in various fields of expertise; BA in Arts, Certified  Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy; Children Focusing; Complex Trauma, Somatic Experience Body Psychotherapy,  Baby yoga and massage, Play and Sand tray therapy. I am certified in ASIST – Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Training, and am currently doing my Master’s in Psychotherapy and Spirituality with Art Specialization at the St Stephen’s College UoA University.

I have many years of experience as a therapist using various modalities supporting clients in their healing process.

Michael Yankowski
Contract Therapist

Michael is a Registered Provisional Psychologist who specializes in the areas of grief, loss, and addiction. His professional and personal experience fosters his passion for helping clients recognize their inner strength and true potential. Through his work in the areas of grief, loss, and addiction, Michael has helped clients understand a variety of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, trauma, and self-harm.

While honouring the very personal nature of your experience, Michael understands how grief experienced after the death of a loved or how experiencing other significant changes in life can become overwhelming. The many feelings experienced after, or in anticipation of a loss, can lead us to feel cut off and isolated from the world we have known it to be. Expressing our feelings of grief is a natural way for us to heal. While friends and family may serve as our strongest forms of support through this time, they may also be limited in their ability to support us.

Tina Kafka MSW, RSW
Contract Therapist

Tina has been a therapist at Jewish Family Services and the Healing Center for Grief and Loss in Edmonton for the last 16 years and is also the clinical supervisor.  She completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Human Relations in Organizations, and her Master Degree in Social Work, specializing in Mental Health, and Children and Families.

Tina developed and gave seminars for COUPLES   throughout the US, Europe, and in Canada.  Prior to JFS, Tina has worked as Victim’s Advocate to the Court,  Children’s Services, Hospice, death and dying, and leading Women Outdoors camping expeditions in Maui HI and in the Colorado Rockies.

Tina connects with people in kindness, creating a space where being authentic and vulnerable can lead to finding deeper inner resources, shifting perspective through the challenges of our lives.

Tina Van Der Worp
Contract Therapist

I am a trained psychotherapist and certified grief therapist with a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychotherapy.  I work with individuals and couples and also facilitate therapeutic groups for healing from grief and loss. In my work, I use a variety of gentle and powerful techniques to help clients deeply listen within and safely touch their feelings, memories and body sensations. I also help clients embrace and heal their “’inner child” which leads them to feel more deeply connected to themselves and to their lives.

Arthur Totman
Contract Therapist

Arthur Hansen Totman MSW, RSW has plowed, weeded, and seeded in the fields of social work for the past 44 years, 15 of those at Jewish Family Services as a clinical psychotherapist and intern supervisor. Mostly retired, he reports he is still working for the sweet joy of deepening connections ( the “harvest”) with his clients.

Elizabeth Eaton B.A Psych, MPS Candidate
Intern Student

Elizabeth completed her undergraduate degree at McGill University and is currently enrolled in a Master’s in Psychotherapy and Spirituality at St. Stephen’s College in Edmonton. She has expertise in mind-body and mindfulness somatic therapy modalities. She previously volunteered with the Edmonton Distress Line, as well as Freeing the Human Spirit, an organization which teaches mindfulness and yoga to inmates in detainment centres.

As guiding principles, Elizabeth believes in presence and trust. Presence, in mindfully attending to our experience of the present-moment. Trust, that when things seem muddy, we can be patient if we believe they’ll eventually become clear. Her approach is person-centered, Rogerian, and existential.
